Review of sorts anyway....
First the venue, the Walt Disney concert hall is a masterpiece of modern architecture both inside and out. The hall itself boasting acoustic features that help create a wonderful sound.
I have to admit the dignified atmosphere made for an odd pre gig experience, no old friends meeting at a nearby bar and swapping stories of gigs past. Nobody there seemed to know anyone else than the folk they'd arrived with. Covid passes and mask wearing were rigidly enforced, even during the performance, which I could have done without, but their hall, their rules so....
But there are no bad seats and they were comfortable seats too.
The set list for both Monday and last night were the same. Edgar Wright had been there Monday.
The whole thing started off with Ron playing the intro to No 1 song on the famed organ. What a sound!! I'm no musician but he seemed to cope well, playing a Roland and playing a pipe organ are two very different things.
The set list contained the usual favourites, Ron's dance during No1 song, This Town Amateur Hour, WDIGTSMW, etc, a good sprinkling of newbies from A Steady Drip and Annette, plus some I've never heard live before eg Under the Table with Her (featuring a double bass), Shopping Mall of Love, it will be interesting to see how much of the set list changes when they get to Europe.
Russell's voice was on top form and the backing band were excellent, Stevie Nistor really is a very fine drummer keeping things driving onwards.
Of course we are used to Russell gyrating about the stage like a whirling dervish. Whisper this softly, he has slowed down. Still plenty of bopping but not continuously, and for 2 songs he sat on a stool.
One major niggle...the lighting. The semi circle of lights behind the band were very effective, but the 2 strips of lights between them and R&R were often blinding to the point of not being able to actually see what was going on.
But that aside, a wonderful, wonderful evening from musicians still at the top of their game, All That, the final song, being accompanied by a swaying audience holding their phone flashlights aloft.
Roll on Manchester, the next time I'm seeing them.

| I saw them last night (Feb 8) first time getting to see them. I had high expectations and was still blown away. That was incredible. I hope they come back again soon. |

Did the Palace Theatre concert in 2018 at the end of the Hippopotamus tour not count as a big downtown LA show ? |

re: slowing down. in fairness, this show seems to have been an hour longer than usual? so gotta do what's sustainable! |
